The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay

During a recent roadtrip, we thoroughly enjoyed listening to a recent podcast of the "Selected Shorts" program from WNYC. This particular episode of "Selected Shorts" featured actor and writer John Lithgow reciting an eclectic mix of enjoyable poems (including some of my very favorites) from his recently-published anthology of poetry, "The Poet's Corner," as well as a wonderful dramatic reading of the classic short story, "The Monkey's Paw," by W. W. Jacobs. Mr. Lithgow's "fervent reading" of both beautiful poetry and macabre tales was extremely enthralling, and we highly praise the life that he brought to the readings...we'll be sure to listen again to this episode towards the end of October!

I particularly enjoyed his reading of Oliver Wendell Holmes' poem, "Deacon's Masterpiece," also known as "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay." You can find a reproduction of the poem at this link: http://www.bartleby.com/102/103.html.
