So in honor of National Pie Day, I thought I'd briefly share my five favorite pies:
- Apple pie
- Coconut Cream Pie
- Washington Pie**
- Chocolate Walnut Pie
- Pumpkin Pie
Hopefully I have not insulted anyone or any pies with my selections, because this list in no way is an exclusive list of pies that I like (pecan, lemon chess, banana cream, key lime, etc.). I'm a big pie fan, and choosing five was hard to do...this is just a "slice" of the numerous pies I enjoy.
*Understanding that there are pies that you don't eat for dessert which are wonderful as well (pizza pie, tomato pie, shepherd's pie, chicken pot pie, etc.), we're just recognizing dessert pies this time around.
**Washington pie (also known as George Washington pie) is a little bit more obscure of a pie. It is very similar to Boston Cream Pie, and many see it as the predecessor to Boston Cream Pie. Different definitions exist: some say it is simply a two-layer cake with fruit filling in the middle and powdered sugar on top, while the version I came to love is made by my grandma by cutting a cake through the middle, filling the middle with pastry cream, and topping it with powdered sugar. It's absolutely delicious, and if you're interested in learning more, I found an article that talks about the pie's history and variations.
