Tour of Texas Top Five

A week ago we were returning from our holiday trek to visit family in south Texas. We had a wonderful time and saw lots of family. We also ate lots of good food, mostly of the homemade variety, at both the Lewis and Shay households: meatball subs, boneless pork ribs, coconut cream pie, penne rustica, potato salad, chocolate chip cookies, Italian pizza bread, peppermint ice cream pie, tortilla soup, appetizer extravaganza, etc.

We also had the chance to grab a few food items that we don't have the chance of enjoying in Virginia, and I thought I'd list the Top Five foods we'll remember (non-homemade related) during our holiday travel (in no particular order):
  • Taco Garage in San Antonio: Great bean and cheese tacos - a staple when we were residents there
  • Home Slice in Austin: The eggplant pie was a revelation...a terrific pizza! (www.homeslicepizza.com)
  • Alamo Springs Cafe in Comfort: Enjoyed the #3 burger in the state, and the jalapeno cheese bun was what made it stand apart (www.alamospringscafe.com)
  • Mi Madre's in Austin: Incredible breakfast tacos that saw us on our way out of the state (www.mimadresrestaurant.com)
  • The Varsity in Atlanta: A famous drive-in restaurant known for hot dogs and chili cheeseburgers (www.thevarsity.com)

you need to be my urbanspoon friend. i gave homeslice pizza a nice review too. it's fun to be a pretend food critic and publically critique the restaurants.
