Shelter
A recent article in USA Today highlights the recent renewal of interest in "doomsday shelters."
The article notes that such underground shelters are making a "comeback" and even include a facility that, for a mere $41 million, can comfortably sustain 750 people for one to five years with food, water, power, and filtered air. While such shelters are being designed and promoted to protect those who maintain concerns of catastrophes such as natural disasters or nuclear attack, experts suggest that their renewed popularity signifies the desire of individuals to "bring order to a world full of risk and uncertainty."
While the story may seem a bit far-fetched, I can relate in many ways to the desire to control my surroundings and find a solution to my fears. Yet I must also recognize that, as a believer, I am never guaranteed safety in this world, or that my life will be free of risk or uncertainty. Indeed, as a participant in this fallen world, I must instead cling to the only safety that is found in Christ. Letting go of our fears and our continual urge to be in control, we are called to submit to and trust in the God who is in control of all things.
