The Tenth Inning
I just found out that Ken Burns is making a sequel to one of his most popular documentaries, to be shown later this month on PBS!
When I first heard that Ken Burns was creating a second installment of the most watched program in PBS history, I assumed that the reference was being made to his documentary on the Civil War or perhaps World War II. I was surprised and excited to discover that the sequel will be to his popular Baseball documentary and, just in time for the coming postseason, will be showing on September 28th and 29th on PBS.
The title of the documentary is Baseball: The Tenth Inning, and it provides new material about the sport covering 1993 to present-day, which is most of the time that I have been following baseball since I became a fan in the late part of the 1980s. (Some may note that this also covers the entire period that the Pirates have gone without a winning season, I am sorry to admit). This will include the baseball strike in 1994, the McGwire-Sosa chase to break Maris's record, the Yankees dynasty, the steroid scandal, the Red Sox championships, and the global reach of the sport (let's hope that the Pirates' consistent futility doesn't get mentioned...).
I loved last year's documentary on The National Parks, and I am once again excited for another Ken Burns special. If you're interested in reading a brief interview with Ken Burns about the upcoming documentary, click here.
